Taking Off and Landing

These Days…

…I’m a bundle of stress. Thanks to Kevin, I have cookies, of the Girl-Scout variety. And Rift-Valley Starbucks coffee.

Thanks to my girlfriend, I have support and affirmation that I’m not a total tool.

Thanks to my friends, I have the space to continue reading 40 hours a week and not lose complete touch with the social world.

Thanks to Thom Yorke, I have motivation to finish prelims so that I can get back to the business of listening to rock and roll music.

But for now, I’m ass-deep in political theory, Augustine, and the long story of Christian theology. Call if you get the chance.

On Studying for Prelims

Schleiermacher sucks.

So does studying eight hours straight.

But coffee’s real nice.

The Rundown

So,

It’s January of 2008, and many changes are afoot. First and foremost, I’m done with taking classes. Forever. No. More.

Except for the one hour a week colloquium that I still have to go to.
And the teaching colloquy in the Fall.
And the six hours of philosophy I need to pick up in order to get the full teaching minor.
(sigh). Such artificial victories.

In any event, the next four months will be spent preparing for my preliminary exams, which I take in May. Between now and May, I’ll be getting reacquainted with the basics of Christian theology, beginning with the apostolic fathers, and zooming up to the present as fast I can. That’s right: everything you ever wanted to read about Christian theology in one semester, from the Didache to John Zizoulas. I may vomit regularly.

Some brief highlights of 2007, and then, I gots to get to work, ladies and gents:

New Years’ Eve 2007, and sweating on the dance floor
Parties at the Big Blue House
Kenya. Rwanda. Fred. Changing my mind.
Summer, rain, August, pain.
Sarah Martin. Snow. Laughter. Red Boxes. Dutch Blitz. Scrabble.

It’s a big blur of images: I don’t journal as much as I should, and 2007 was a year light on blogging, so my records are scant. But it was a good one. Here’s to 2008.
